Dr. Todd J. Crocco is a full Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine where he also serves as the Director of Prehospital Care & Telemedicine. His passion for prehospital care and telemedicine is reflected by his current participation in the development of a mobile integrated health and community paramedicine program that represents a partnership between the University of Maryland Medical Center and the Baltimore City Fire Department. In this capacity, Dr. Crocco also serves as the Deputy Assistant Medical Director for EMS.

Prior to joining the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Dr. Crocco worked at West Virginia University for 17 years where he served in numerous capacities. Among these roles, he served as Principal Investigator and Medical Director of the West Virginia University Clinical & Pharmacologic Research Center as well as the Chief Business Development Officer for the Health Sciences Center. In these capacities, he was responsible for conducting clinical and pharmacologic trials affecting patients around the world as well as developing new and innovative ways to provide better care to the population of West Virginia through the development of telemedicine services.

Dr. Crocco also as the chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at West Virginia University for 10 years. As department chair, Dr. Crocco was responsible for overseeing the department’s missions of clinical service, education, and research. During his tenure as chair, he achieved several accomplishments including the expansion of department-based emergency services into emergency departments throughout northern West Virginia, creation of an institutional urgent care system, growth of the departmental research enterprise and infrastructure, and established enhancements in the department’s educational programs.

On an academic level, Dr. Crocco has been devoted to studying the role of prehospital emergency care systems in the treatment of stroke victims. He has conducted several studies examining the feasibility of neuroprotective agent administration, neuroprotective agent development, new thrombolytic therapies, improving community awareness of the signs/symptoms/risk factors of stroke, as well as studying the knowledge base of EMS providers regarding stroke care.

Dr. Crocco has been an active educator of medical students, residents, and physician assistants. He has won numerous awards for his teaching ability. He is frequently invited to speak about stroke care at the regional, state, and national levels.
